Lignans Health Benefits

Lignans are excellent for balancing hormone levels in the body. In females especially, they help balance estrogen levels; in males especially, they help balance the testosterone-DHT relationship and inhibit enzymes (such as 5α-reductase) needed to convert testosterone to DHT. (DHT is, essentially, a very potent form of testosterone (2-3 times more likely to bind to the relevant receptor than testosterone) and remains active in the body roughly twice as long as testosterone.) This results in lower DHT levels, which may improve prostate health and excess-testosterone-related conditions. Further reading here. * Lignans also have anti-estrogenic effects and can prevent naturally occurring hormones from binding to estrogen receptors and exerting their negative effects. Lignans provide a weaker form of estrogen. Thus, they are believed to be helpful in balancing out both estrogen deficiencies (by supplying phytoestrogens to otherwise inactive receptors) and excesses (through at least two separate mechanisms – first, by competing with much stronger estrogen for the same receptors and second, by inhibiting aromatase activity). Further reading here. * Flax lignans have emerged as an important nutritional supplement because of their exceptionally high content of dietary fiber and phytoestrogens. The high amount of fiber in flaxseed lignans also helps support colon health. Lignans have indicated a variety of other benefits, such as heart health, cholesterol reduction, and hair health. Lignans also provide antioxidant protection and are believed to have a higher ORAC (antioxidant) value than any fruit or vegetable. * Click here for our women's health page. Research

Lignans are converted in the body into the mammalian lignans (enterolignans) enterodiol and enterolactone. Enterolignans have been shown to be potent antioxidants. They reduce the free radicals that otherwise damage tissues, membrane lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins, and may lead to diseases or premature aging. Enterolignans also stimulate the synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin, effectively binding sex hormones and thereby reducing their circulation in the blood stream and thus their biological activity. * There are numerous studies that indicate improved health from hormone balance, such as reduced rates of menopausal symptoms and maintaining prostate health. Some studies have indicated improved hair growth. *

What's the difference between this product and regular flaxseed?

Regular flaxseed contains the embryo of the seed (or kernel), which is where the oil comes from. Our product contains the hull of the flaxseed, which is extracted by grinding the flax seeds and then separating the hulls using either a mechanical separator or by pressing out the oil or some combination of the two methods. Thus, the oil content is reduced from 40-50% in whole flax to 11-15% in our product. Although it contains virtually no lignans, the remaining oil is valuable as one of the best plant sources of Omega-6 oils and one of the only quality plant sources of Omega-3 oils. Better still, the harder-to-obtain Omega-3 content exceeds the Omega-6 content. However, too much oil is bad for the body and can result in excessive triglycerides. In addition, both the oil and any hulls it remains attached to will eventually go rancid. Thus, our flax hulls have the best of both worlds: just enough flax oil to supply valuable Omega 3 and 6 oils and concentrated flax lignans to confer their health benefits. Moreover, flax hulls are an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
