SAMeThistle Pro is Lignans for Life’s latest product, an all-in-one supplement designed to support liver function and oxidative balance, especially in dogs showing signs of Cushing's syndrome (including Cushing’s disease), cognitive decline, or chronic inflammation. If you're familiar with Denamarin®, this is a comparable product made with S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and Milk Thistle Extract (Silybin A+B).
But when it comes to SAMeThistle Pro, one question always comes up:
“How much should I give my dog based on weight?” We’ve got you covered, with a clear dosing chart and practical tips (especially if your pup’s a picky eater).
Why SAMe and Milk Thistle?
Let’s quickly break down the benefits before we get into dosing.
SAMe (S-Adenosylmethionine)
A naturally occurring compound that supports liver cell regeneration, detoxification, and mood balance in both humans and dogs. Veterinarians often recommend it for dogs with elevated liver enzymes or cognitive issues.
Milk Thistle (Silybin)
A well-researched antioxidant known to help repair liver tissue, reduce inflammation, and improve bile flow. Silybin A+B, the bioactive compounds in milk thistle, are known to be more absorbable when complexed with phosphatidylcholine.
The combination has been shown to reduce liver enzyme levels in dogs and is commonly used as part of the treatment for Cushing’s syndrome (including Cushing’s disease) or long-term steroid use.
SAMeThistle Pro Dosing by Weight: Simple Chart
SAMeThistle Pro is formulated for daily use based on your dog’s weight. Here's a quick reference guide for dogs that aren’t on other medications. (In particular if your dog is on other medications, check with your vet about possible interactions before beginning this or any other supplement.):
|
Dog’s Weight (lbs) |
Recommended Dose (per day) |
Notes |
|
Under 10 lbs |
Either 1 tablet every other day or a half tablet daily* |
Closely monitor tolerance after first several doses and discontinue if the dog has difficulty swallowing or if any side effects (such as digestion problems, dizziness, anxiety or sweating) are observed |
|
11–20 lbs |
1 tablet |
Can be given with a small treat, if needed |
|
21–40 lbs |
Either alternate daily between 1 and 2 tablets or give 1.5 tablets every day* |
For the days with the higher dose in particular, monitor tolerance and discontinue if side effects are observed. |
|
41–60 lbs |
2 tablets |
Morning dosing an hour before breakfast is preferred |
|
61–80 lbs |
Either alternate daily between 2 and 3 tablets or give 2.5 tablets every day* |
May be split between meals, although morning dosing an hour before breakfast is ideal |
|
Over 80 lbs |
3 tablets |
Adjust based on veterinarian guidance |
* For these dosings, you can either cut the pill in half or alternate days at the higher dose. If the alternation is tolerated, this will generally be the preferred approach. If, however, you need to provide a half tablet, then you can cut the pill in half immediately before administration. However, SAMe degrades quickly once exposed to air or liquids (this is why our pills have an enteric coating–to get them past the stomach). So, please note that some of the SAMe will be lost with exposure to the air and passage through the body past the stomach and as a result, your animal will get less than a half dose as a result. You might want to increase the dosing somewhat in this case (for example by giving the bigger “half” or fraction of the pill). In any event, the other fraction of the pill should be discarded unless it is given very soon after the first fraction.
Tip
Always check with your vet if your dog is on medications or has an underlying condition before starting any supplement.
When and How to Give SAMeThistle Pro
SAMe is best absorbed on an empty stomach, ideally after the night’s sleep and one hour before feeding. However, that’s easier said than done with picky eaters.
Here are a few options:
1. Pill Pocket Trick
Use a soft treat, such as a pill pocket or moldable treat dough. Gently wrap the tablet without crushing it. This maintains the enteric coating, which is important for SAMe absorption in the small intestine.
2. Meatball Method
Form a tiny meatball using boiled chicken or lean ground turkey. Insert the tablet in the center and offer it before breakfast. Follow with a small meal 30–60 minutes later.
3. Empty Stomach Cheating (Safely)
If your dog refuses pills on an empty stomach, you can give it with a minimal amount of food (think 1–2 teaspoons) to get the tablet down. While not ideal, minimal food won’t completely negate the benefit.
4. For Smaller Dogs: Tablet Splitters
Use a pet-safe pill cutter to split tablets cleanly and immediately before administration. In addition to helping with dosing, this can also be a means of adjusting for a gradual introduction. However, as we noted above, this should be considered a last resort as it exposes the pill to air and water and will therefore cause the animal to get a reduced dose. If this method is used, the pill should be cut immediately before administration to minimize exposure to air. We recommend discarding the other half unless it is given in quick succession with the first half.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can SAMeThistle Pro be used long-term?
Yes. It’s commonly used for chronic liver support, especially in dogs with elevated liver enzymes or those on long-term medications.
Can I Give This With Other Supplements?
Yes, but make sure there's no overlap in active ingredients. For example, flaxseed lignans (for Cushing’s) can generally be paired safely with SAMeThistle Pro, but double-check with your vet if you're stacking multiple products.
How Long Does It Take To See Results?
Many dog owners report improvements in liver enzyme labs within 4–6 weeks. Behavioral changes, such as better appetite or less lethargy, may occur sooner.
For Dogs with Cushing’s Syndrome: A Complementary Support
Cushing’s syndrome (including Cushing’s disease) can stress the liver, particularly if medications like prednisone or trilostane are used. SAMeThistle Pro supports liver detox pathways and helps maintain healthy liver enzyme levels. Combine it with flaxseed lignans and melatonin (also available on www.lignans.com) for a well-rounded support plan.
How to Tell If It’s Working
You might notice:
-
More energy or alertness
-
Improved appetite
-
Better stool quality
-
Healthier coat
But the honest answer lies in bloodwork. After 4–6 weeks of use, your vet can retest liver enzyme levels (such as ALT and ALP) to assess improvement.
Tips for Success
-
Stick to the same time daily to keep absorption consistent.
-
Don’t crush the tablet; the coating protects SAMe from stomach acid.
-
Store in a cool, dry place to preserve effectiveness
-
Pair with flaxseed lignans for additional hormone and antioxidant support
