How melatonin works
Melatonin is produced naturally in the pineal gland and peaks after sunset, signaling time of day and season to the body. Natural production declines with age, which is one reason older dogs often sleep less soundly. Directions for dogs
Based on the protocol from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and the late Dr. Jack Oliver, DVM, former head of its endocrinology department:
- Dogs 10 lbs or less: 1 mg (1 tablet) every 12 hours
- Dogs under 30 lbs: 3 mg (3 tablets) every 12 hours
- Dogs over 30 lbs: 5–6 mg (5–6 tablets) every 12 hours, or use our 3 mg or 6 mg melatonin for fewer tablets
